Broncos Reset Sights on Quarterback Sam Howell

Denver Outbid by Seattle in Draft Day Trade

Broncos Back in Quarterback Market After Howell Miss

Following their failed attempt to acquire Sam Howell in the NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos are back in the market for a quarterback. The Broncos were outbid by the Seattle Seahawks for Howell and are now exploring other options.

The Broncos have struggled to find a franchise quarterback since the retirement of Peyton Manning in 2015. They have cycled through a number of options, including Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater, but none have been able to consistently lead the team to success.

The old regime in Denver, led by former General Manager John Elway, tried every which way to acquire a true franchise quarterback. They traded up in the draft for Paxton Lynch and signed quarterbacks like Case Keenum and Joe Flacco, but none of those moves paid off.

The Broncos are now under new leadership, with George Paton taking over as General Manager. Paton is expected to take a more patient approach to building the team, but the Broncos still need to find a long-term solution at quarterback.

There are a number of quarterbacks who could be available to the Broncos, either via trade or free agency. Here are a few potential targets:

  • Jimmy Garoppolo (San Francisco 49ers)
  • Baker Mayfield (Cleveland Browns)
  • Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons)
  • Derek Carr (Las Vegas Raiders)

The Broncos will have to weigh the pros and cons of each of these quarterbacks before making a decision. They will need to find a player who is a good fit for their system and who can lead them back to the playoffs.

Starting Quarterbacks in Broncos History:

  • John Elway (1983-1998)
  • Peyton Manning (2012-2015)
  • Russell Wilson (2022-2023)
  • Teddy Bridgewater (2021)
  • Drew Lock (2019-2020)
